With the approach of Christmas, the Anambra State Government is not leaving any stone unturned to ensure a hitch free celebration not only for residents of the state but also for those who will visit to spend Christmas with their families and loved ones.
To this end, the state government recently at the Mini Stadium, Obosi, Idemili North local Government Area of the state launched a Yuletide Security Operation code named “Operation Udoamaka”, meaning ” Peace is Good “.
The essence was to continue in the fight against crime and criminality in the state and to sustain the tempo of peace and security which the state had continued to enjoy in recent times and for which it had been adjudged as the safest state in Nigeria.
The event started with a Guard of Honour, mounted by the State Police Command, and inspected by Governor Willie Obiano on arrival.
Addressing the people, the state governor, Chief Willie Obiano said the choice of Obosi, as venue for the event was not accidental, but was specifically chosen to send security signals to criminal elements hiding in Obosi and environ saying the state would not tolerate any nuisance, and would deal ruthlessly with any criminal apprehended.
Governor Obiano stated that the state had blocked all entrance roads, seas and air from where the criminals would have access into the state, disclosing that he had provided the Navy in the state with adequate speed boats to secure the seas, and as well directed the police surveillance team to be on air regularly.
The governor thanked the Assistant Inspector General of Police,AIG Idris for his support to the State in providing armoured vehicles and deploying 120 trained mobile policemen to the State for the yuletide season.
He said the smart vehicles donated recently to the state police command had further been enabled to trace and detect any plot by criminal elements to constitute nuisance in the state.
Governor Obiano commended the synergy and exchange of information among security agencies in the state and urged the people of the state to be vigilant and provide adequate information to the police.
The Governor revealed that he had met with the governors of Enugu and Delta states to fashion out ways to further secure the state and to ensure free flow of traffic particularly during the Christmas and new year celebrations.
He however urged the people of the state and visitors to come home for the season as their lives and property are secured, assuring the security personnel that he would always see to their welfare and appreciate them for the services rendered to the State.
The Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 9, AIG Hassan karma who spoke on the occasion said the first responsibility of any governor of a state is security of lives and property, expressing happiness that Governor Obiano adopted such policy by making security a priority in his administration.
Mr Karma commended the governor for the synergy which he created among security personnel in the state which according to him had attracted the attention of other states who jostle to borrow a leaf from the Anambra policy on security.
In his address, the State Commissioner of Police, C. P Sam Okaula noted that the purpose of the event was to sustain and improve on the security situation in the state especially during the Christmas and New Year celebration.
C. P Okaula said that the event was was significant as it heralded a special and strategic joint Security initiative aimed at ensuring a crime free celebration, in keeping with the standard already set since the administration of governor Willie Obiano.
” From 2014 till date, Anambra State has continued to improve in security with uncommon commitment and zeal by all the security agencies who have ensured that safety of lives and property are guaranteed” he said.
Commissioner Okaula disclosed that the launch of the exercise was the third in a series of strategic security operations in the state which commenced with ” Operation Kpochapu” in 2014 to ” Operation Sheba ” in the 2015 ” ember” period, adding that the recent operation would provide a secured environment better than the state had ever experienced in the past.
He reassured citizens of the state and visitors alike of the security of their lives and property, saying the police had mapped out unique traffic management strategy to ensure that the Niger Bridge and other strategic routes are free of traffic gridlock so that travelers are not inconvenienced unduly.
The Commissioner commended the Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris for his exemplary leadership and support to the command, especially with the recent deployment of two units of brand new Armoured Personnel Carriers to boost their operation capacity as well as his approval for the release of a helicopter for aerial Patrol of the state within the yuletide period.
He commended Governor Obiano for his unequalled support with logistics needs and his determination to restore peace and order in the state.
The highlights of the event was presentation of awards to the best operation officer from police, best intelligent officer from the DSS, the best Narcotic officer from NDLEA, the best non commissioned officer from the state traffic agency, and the best vigilant team, as well as demo parade.
The occasion was graced by different security outfits in the state, police, DSS, FRSC, Civil Defence, Nigeria Army, and many more.
Others were political office holders, traditional rulers religious leaders and other dignitaries.
