The Anambra State Government has held a two day training for caterers in the 21 LGAs of the state who were recently selected to implement the Federal Government’s Home Grown School Feeding Programme in the state.
The training which was conducted for Nine Hundred and Ninety-Four caterers was aimed at giving at least one nutritional meal per day to all primary one to three pupils in the state during school hours.
The training took place at the twenty-one local government headquarters in the state, with caterers drawn from the one hundred and seventy nine communities in the state who will prepare, cook, serve and feed the pupils during school hours.
The school feeding programme is designed among other things to increase the attendance of school pupils to schools, eradicate hunger and poverty, create employment and improve healthy upbringing of pupils.
In her speech during the training at Ukpo, Dunukofia Local Government Headquarters, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on donor agencies, Lady Chinwe Iwuchukwu, appealed to the caterers to adopt the best personnel hygiene practices in the discharge of their duties. She disclosed that the programme has developed a menu which the caterers are expected to work with, advising them to comply with the laid down guidelines to ensure that the right nutrients are contained in the menu, warning against sharp practices.
The Programme Manager of home grown school feeding initiative Anambra East Government Area, Ngozi Ekwedike, said the programme is very necessary because it will improve health and nutritional status of school children, as well as retain them in school.
A facilitator of the Programme, Ifeanyinwa Uzoka and Head of Department of Administration, Anambra East Local Government Area, Angela Ilozuoke, commended Governor Willie Obiano for keying into the initiative. One of the caterers, Mrs. Ugochukwu Nwabuisi promised to follow the laid down rules in carrying out her duties.
