The Anambra State Government has promised to complete the Amansea – Nkpor- Bridge Head, Onitsha stretch of its street lighting project before the forthcoming Christmas holiday.
Governor Willie Obiano who made the pledge during the symbolic switch-on of the newly installed street lights in Abagana, Njikoka local government area, said the aim is to restore night life and strengthen the existing security in the state, especailly during the festivity.
Governor Obiano explained that the street lights which span over seven kilometres from Abagana community to Dunukofia LGA were part of the first phase of the one hundred and seventy six kilometre project.
The Governor promised that the project would also be extended to the stretch of the Enugu-Onitsha expressway covering the three flyovers from Awka to Amawbia, five additional streets in Nnewi as well as some interior parts of Onitsha. He urged the people of Abagana to help protect the street lights and other government property in their area from being vandalized.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Power and Domestic Water Development, Mr Obi Nwankwo had explained that the one hundred and fifty street lights which were installed with high resolution light emitting diaodes (L.E.Ds)from Enugwu-Ukwu to Abagana would be run by a one hundred and fifty KVA power generating set.
Mr Nwankwo stated that the target of government was to install street lights in the three senatorial districts of the state, adding that over sixty kilometers of the entire area of coverage have been completed.
Some of the people who spoke on the occasion including Chinazo Okeke and Uche Nwakor expressed gratitude to the state government for installing the street lights which according to them would help to boost commercial activities in the area especially at nights
