Obiano flags off Tree Planting Campaign

The Anambra State Government has commenced the first phase of its one million tree planting campaign in the state.

Similarly, the government has launched the one-child-one-tree project for primary and secondary schools in the state.

Flagging off the campaign at the Prof Kenneth Dike E-Library, Awka, Governor Willie Obiano said government had deemed it necessary to embark on the project to beautify the environment and check the impact of flood and erosion in the state.

Governor Obiano regretted that most parts of the state had been devastated by erosion, blaming the situation on some unwholesome human activities on the environment such as indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainages and illegal sand excavation.

The Governor however urged the people to adopt the habit of planting trees as well as other environmental friendly practices to check further land degradation in the state.

Governor Obiano while stating that the one-child-one-tree project was designed for pupils and students in primary and secondary schools in the state to learn how to plant trees, announced that government would soon introduce a special specie of grass known as vativa that would be planted in erosion prone areas of the state to prevent the spread of erosion.

Earlier, the Chairman of the tree planting committee and Managing Director of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, ACTDA, Mr Mike Okonkwo who explained that the tree planting initiative was adopted from Lagos state because of the successes it recorded in the greenery revolution of the state said the target of the Anambra State Government is to be at par with urban forest cities of the world like Tokyo,Japan and Belfast in Netherlands.

Mr Okonkwo while stating that the tree planting campaign would be taken to worship centres, corporate organisations and markets, said the trees would be planted in parks and public gardens in the three senatorial districts of the state.

The Commissioner for Agriculture, Processing and Mechanization, Mr Afam Mbanefo commended the state government for initiating the tree planting campaign which according to him would spur people to plant trees and grasses that would help protect the environment.
